About Me

My name is Sophie Dor and I am an aspiring music journalist. I was born and raised in Maryland by two immigrant parents from Haiti. I am the youngest of two and come from a very big family. My mother has 11 siblings and there are many cousins that came from my many aunts and uncles. My most memorable moment about growing up was learning about my Haitian culture. I got to learn how to speak creole and visit Haiti a few times. Many people have a tainted view about Haiti but hearing how it truly was for my parents and seeing it for myself has allowed me to fall in love with my culture. There was never a dull moment in my childhood because of my big family.

Growing up music has always been present in my life. My parents constantly played Haitian music and the little American music they knew such as Notorious BIG, Aaliyah, Tupac, and Micheal Jackson. My biggest inspiration for my love for hip hop and wanting to become a music journalist came from my older brother. He constantly watched BET’s 106&Park and always played hip hop on the house’s stereo system. Seeing how hip-hop brought people together and the different ways it was being re-imagined and evolving inspired me to consume it more and learn more about it. Sometimes the true meaning of hip-hop can be lost in the many different things it offers but I aspire to show people how deep African American culture is in hip-hop and the true original meaning of the genre.

Some of my hobbies include visiting museums, photography, collecting vinyls, and attending concerts. My love for art, music, and fashion drive my hobbies and passions. I enjoy visiting DC a lot as they are known to have many museums and places to visit. I also love trying new restaurants. I love to eat and trying new restaurants is my favorite thing to do with my friends.
