Background
With the ending of the Lost Generation comes the beginning of the Silver Age of Boxing. The Lost Generation would be the rise of stars such as Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Riddick Bowe, and Lennox Lewi. The return of “Big” George Foreman to reclaim the heavyweight belt that he lost from Muhammad Ali in 1974. The Silver Age would see the return of older faces, and the rise of newer hungrier fighters.
The Superstars of this Era
The Silver Age would see the reign of formidable champions such as Mike Tyson, Buster Douglas, Evander Holyfield, Riddick Bowe, Michael Moorer, George Foreman, and Lennox Lewis. This era would be the rise towards redemption for George Foreman, and the return of Larry Holmes to reclaim the belt he lost to Michael Spinks.
This era would see classic fights and events such as the trilogy between Riddick Bowe and Evander Holyfield, the reclamation of the heavyweight title by George Foreman, the long awaited duology of Holyfield v. Tyson, the trilogy of Holyfield v. Lewis, and the long awaited fight between Lewis and Tyson. This era would also have fighters such as Andrew Golota, David Tua, Hasim Rahman, Tommy Morrison, Ray Mercer, Razor Ruddock and Ike Ibeabuchi.
This era would be stacked full of talent, and is comparable to the Golden Era of Heavyweights. The era would have interesting stories within it such as the rise and fall of “Iron” Mike Tyson, and the return and rise of George Foreman.
Conclusion
This era would come to a close in 2002 with the battle between Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson, with Lennox Lewis knocking out Mike Tyson in the eighth round of a twelve round fight. Lennox Lewis would soon retire in 2003 after facing Vitali Klitschko and winning by technical knockout.
