Camera
What’s photography without a camera? Choosing the right camera can be difficult and can require extensive research. When looking for the best camera consider brand, price, and features. The top camera brands include Canon, Nikon, and Sony. Canon and Nikon are often used for photography where Sony is more of a videography camera. Pricing can range anywhere between a couple hundred dollars to tens of thousands. Remember that cameras are complex delicate pieces of technology and are an investment. Features can be abundant and overwhelming, so make sure you know what you’re looking for and what you need (and don’t need). Be sure to compare cameras to ensure you get what you need, but don’t overpay for something you don’t. DP Review is a highly recommended site for comparing cameras and gear.
Lenses
The possibilities are endless when it comes to lenses. A camera without a lens is useless to a photographer. Like cameras, lenses are extremely complex and range in price. Most cameras are equipped with standard kit lenses, but all photographers have more than just the standard lens. Much of the time, the standard lens is hardly used as the photographer invests in upgrades. The lens is defined by the focal length and aperture which are covered in the Camera Settings and Glossary pages. A high quality lens can help a photographer capture great photos even with a cheap camera, while low-quality lenses can make the best camera mediocre resulting in a poor image. Know what type of photos you are looking to capture and the type of lens your camera is compatible with.
Memory (SD) Card
A memory card is essential and many memory cards are highly recommended. Having multiple memory cards ensures you have a backup in case one fills up in the middle of a shoot or one breaks. Note that not all cameras use the same type of memory card and there are tons of different types like rugged or ones with built in wifi for easy transfer to devices. When you acquire multiple cards, make sure you have a memory card book that holds them all as they are small and easy to lose. SD cards are the most common types of memory cards and can be found almost anywhere from convenience stores to specialized photography shops.
Tripods
Tripods are not mandatory, but also highly recommended as they help to stabilize and keep photos consistent without the risk of motion blur. Finding the right tripod comes down to the right balance between portability and strength. A camera with a bulkier lens may become tiresome to hold on long shoots. A recommended tripod for serious beginners is the Manfrotto 055 Aluminum 3-Section Tripod as it hold 20 lbs and is lightweight itself at only 5 lbs. There are many other tripods available at places like Best Buy, Amazon, and Target with a lower price tag.
