The Wolf Rock and Chimney Rock trail located in Thurmont, Maryland is known for excellent terrain and some of the best natural views in the entire state of Maryland. Hence the name of the trail, this hike contains a moderate climb before reaching two jaw dropping vistas. Located in rural Northern Maryland, lots of wildlife and wildflowers can be expected to be spotted as long as you journey there in warmer weather. However, the trail is open year-round from dusk to dawn. After ascending to the top of the two peaks, it is highly recommended to bring a blanket and enjoy the views!
What to Know Before You Go: Dogs are allowed on the trail, as long as they are leashed. The loop to the two rocks is about 3.8 miles start to finish and takes around 2 hours to complete (without stopping to enjoy the views). Expect rocky and uneven terrain, so proper footwear is highly recommended. The trail itself is capable for all levels of hikers as well. There is no fee to utilize the Catoctin Mountain Park where the trail is located, however, there is a limited amount of parking spaces. Camping is also permitted in the park, but there is a camping fee required to be paid.
