The Swallow Falls Canyon Trail is home to some of the most naturally beautiful features in the entire state of Maryland and contains 3 different waterfalls all in the along the same hike! This super family friendly hiking trail is sure to be one of the most memorable trails for any outdoors enthusiast. Located in Oakland, Maryland right in the heart of the deep creek area is the Muddy Creek Falls. This impressive waterfall is over 53 feet tall and is considered to be the tallest waterfall in the entire state of Maryland. There is great access to both the upper and lower area of the falls, however, be cautious of slippery footing present. The entire trail runs along all 3 waterfalls and is attached to the biodiverse Youghiogheny River. While hiking, expect to see lots of other people, wildlife, kayakers, natural rock formations, and natural landscape.

What to Know Before You Go: The entire Swallow Falls Canyon Trail is only 1.1 miles long and usually takes around 30 minutes for most hikers to complete. The trail itself features areas partially paved with guard rails, making it very family friendly. Additionally, there is only 141 feet of elevation gained while on the trail making it not very steep. Dogs are allowed from the Saturday before Memorial Day all the way through Labor Day, on a leash. There is a fee required to enter the Swallow Falls State Park, but there is plenty more to do while in the park with a playground area, pavilion areas, more hiking trails, fishing areas, kayaking access, and more!
