The Great Falls Overlook Trail, also known Billy Goat or Canal Trail, is an exciting mild hike that is sure to be memorable for any outdoors lover. Despite being located in McLean, Virginia, this trail features durations that are in both Maryland and Virginia. The trail features wonderful views of the Potomac River rapids with exciting terrain along the way. The trail is very rocky and at one point, features an actual short rock scramble along the way. One of the best things about the trail is that it actually features two different possible loops. One being a 5.0-mile loop, and the other being a 1.3-mile loop. The trail is also adjacent to the C&O National Historical Park, which provides some fascinating history of the area and river as well.
What to Know Before You Go: The terrain of the trail is extremely rocky, which causes it to be moderately difficult. It is not recommended for completely inexperienced hikers (trails for beginner hikers can be accessible). Additionally, proper footwear such as hiking boots should be worn in order to maintain good footing throughout the hike itself. The park itself prohibits dogs from being allowed on the trail. There is also a $20 charge per vehicle to enter and hike in the park.
