Annapolis has been part of what is now the United States of America since the 1600s. Here are some of the most interesting facts about the coastal city:

  • It was the capital of the colony of Maryland
  • It was the capital of the State of Maryland until 1851.
  • It served as a temporary capital of the United States from 1783-1784
  • The Treaty of Paris was signed in Annapolis, which ended the Revolutionary War
  • The Maryland State House has the oldest state capitol still in use in the US.
  • George Washington resigned as commander-in-chief in the State House in 1783
  • There is a Kunta Kinte – Alex Haley memorial, which represents a character from Roots who was sold as a slave at the Annapolis city docks.
  • It houses the Naval Academy, established in 1845
  • It also has St. John’s College, established in 1696
