One dead, one injured after car collides with horse trailer

ELKTON — The Town of Elkton Mayor and Commissioners unanimously passed a charter amendment last Wednesday granting collective bargaining rights to Elkton’s non-sworn employees.

“Anytime workers take the courageous step to organize and come to the table for improvements with their job, it can be scary but the Elkton employees did it and we are proud of their effort,” said Denise Gilmore, Legislative Director of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.

The motion follows collective bargaining discussions within the town that date back to July, when Elkton’s non-sworn employees presented a petition supporting collective bargaining signed by 41 of the town’s 54 non-sworn employees.

ELKTON — Maryland State Police (MSP) responded to a motor vehicle collision Thursday night that killed a 19 year-old and left the passenger, who investigators believe to be the driver’s mother, in critical condition.

According to police, the crash occurred at approximately 6:28 p.m. when Abigail Meares, 19, from North East, was turning onto Singerly Road (Rt. 213) from a stop sign at the end of Johnstown Road.

Investigators indicated that Meares failed to yield to a Freightliner truck that was hauling horses when turning left onto Singerly Road – causing the Freightliner to crash into Meares’ Buick Enclave.

Despite reports of two dead on arrival, police confirmed that Meares and her mother, Eileen Meares, 55, of North East, were both transported by ground to Christiana Hospital by Singerly Fire Company where Abigail succumbed to her injuries and Eileen remained in critical condition, as of Friday afternoon.

According to police, both the driver and the passenger of the Freightliner were uninjured.

The approximate speed of the truck has not been disclosed as police said the incident was still under investigation.
