Border Contention

In response to the canal construction in Haiti, President Luis Abinader of the Dominican Republic closed all borders as a protest. This border closure resulted in a halt to trading and immigration. After a month, on October 11, 2023, Abinader partially reopened the border for trading. In retaliation, Haitians closed their borders and demanded a public apology from the Dominican Republic’s President.
