Deep Creek Lake, MD has been a popular vacation spot for many years. There are tons of activities to do here in the summer and the winter. There is the lake, skiing resort, and many more fun things.
Before it became a popular vacation town it was a basic town with farms, schools, and neighborhoods. The Youghiogheny (Yock-a-gain-ee) was a river that was between Roman Nose Ridge and Marsh Hill Ridge. Workers had an idea to harness the water power from Youghiogheny to produce electricity.
It took many years for the construction to be granted access. The access was granted in 1921 and construction began in 1923. Deep Creek Lake was mainly manmade to receive water power from the lake and produce electricity. Many farms were bought and destroyed to create it.
Deep Creek Lake is The largest freshwater lake in Maryland. The lake is approximately 13 miles long, covers around 3,900 acres, and is approximately 25 feet deep with a maximum depth of 75 feet.
In the beginning, this was not a big tourist spot. Once people began to spread the word about ice boats and ice fishing in the winter and swimming and fishing in the summer, people started flying in. Cabins began showing up around the area and people from Pittsburgh and the Baltimore/Washington areas started staying in them.
