Building A self Care Routine
Abraham Maslow developed a theory called “Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs”, which breaks your needs down into simple steps. Here are some tips to build a self care routine that prioritizes your hierarchy of needs:
- Invest in a reusable water bottle: not only is it important to drink water, it is useful to have a reusable water bottle to hold you accountable for drinking more water. Your body needs fluids to maintain proper function, and can avoid dehydration which can leave you feeling tired, dizzy, and constipated. This will satisfy your psychological needs.
- Food= Energy: Prioritize fueling your body with proteins, fruits, and veggies. Don’t be afraid to listen to your body and eat a snack. Fuel to the body is fuel to the mind.
- Get good sleep: Sleep is the key to feeling in control. Turning your phone off earlier and going to sleep will give you an earlier start to your day. With the sun setting earlier, prioritizing the daylight provides your body with more vitamin D, ultimately heightening your mood and motivation.
- Connect with loved ones: Exam season can feel like it is consuming your life. Take a couple minutes to call or text a loved one from home, whether its a parent or a close friend. Contacting a loved one can help satisfy your belongingness and love needs.
- #Selfcareday: Carving out a day to take a hike or do a hobby prioritizes you. Remember that Self Care isn’t selfish.
- Staying organized: Take 20 minutes a day to clean a cluttered space, put away dishes, put away laundry, and even something as simple as make your bed. When your space gets messy it can become way harder to feel productive.
- Pamper yourself: If you don’t have a skin care routine, it can help to start one. Something as easy as a simple face wash and moisturizer can make your feel more confident, building your self esteem.
