Balancing Work and Leisure
The key to success is knowing how to balance work and leisure activities. A lot of college students get stressed out because they do not know how to properly time manage their school needs and leisure needs. Here are some tips to help you balance work and other activities.
- Setting Boundaries: The first step to establishing boundaries between work and personal life is defining specific working hours and separating those work related tasks from personal activities. This can stop the procrastination and late nights, giving you a clear view of how much time you need to get work done. Having a schedule also relieves stress, not having to worry about time in the day.
- Time management: Similar to setting boundaries, it is important to set an adequate amount of time for school work, and being realistic with how long tasks may take. For example, an essay may take upwards of 4+ hours to get done, so crafting 1 hour of time to work on the assignment in pieces is way smarter then giving yourself 2 hours to complete the whole assignment the day of.
- Plan Ahead: Planning ahead can save you stress in the future. If you see projects building up, you should start to figure out how you will divide your time to get them done at a decent time, preferably not the night before. I know its easy to push something back when seeing a due date a month ahead, but you will thank yourself in the future.
If you are not sure whether you are productive with balancing work and leisure, here are some signs of having an unhealthy work-life balance:
- Constant Overwork: Constant overwork can look like constant work hours for days at a time one week, and hours of other activities another week. Finding the middle ground between the two of these can help your mental health, and your work ethic.
- Lack of Self-Care: Failure to prioritize self-care activities such as adequate sleep, exercise, and leisure time can result in the deterioration of your physical and mental health.
- Burnout: Burnout is the physical or mental collapse caused by overwork or stress. Giving yourself time in the day to do a fun activity or see friends can prevent burnout.
