The Power of Creative Expression

Doing something creative can increase positive emotions, reduce depressive symptoms and anxiety, and even improve the function of our immune system. Being creative can put someone into the a flow state, also known as being “in the zone.” Being in the zone can feel euphoric , becoming more mindful and relaxed. Here are some ideas to express yourself and be creative.

  • Paint/Drawing: Activities such as painting or drawing can relieve stress and symptoms of depression, as well as improve memory in older adults. Finals season can get very stressful, so take some time to doodle or look up an easy painting project.

  • Spend Time in Nature: Disconnected from technological devices and going out into nature has shown to increase performance in creativity and problem solving by 50%. If you find yourself having a mental block, going on a walk or hike can refresh your mind and make you more relaxed.

Creativity is designed to help us find peace, calm, and happiness in our everyday life. During the end of the semester, try to find a creative outlet to combat the stress of studying for finals.
