Academic Adventures
I went to a private school for kindergarten, and I started school early because I had tested into the grade above. Eventually when private school got expensive, and my parents dealt with financial struggles we had begun to move around Maryland in hopes to find somewhere more permanent to settle down. Growing up my parents had always emphasized the importance of college and education since that was something that they had looked over in their younger years, so from a young age I had my mind set on getting into college. I wasn’t sure which one, but I had known it was important to try my best to get there.
In middle school I had decided I wanted to be a biochemist. I wasn’t even sure what a biochemist did at the time, but I knew I liked science class. Throughout middle school I had been getting easy A’s and passing all of my classes with ease. Eventually my parents bought a house and we moved again. This time it wasn’t as easy to get good grades seeing as how everyone was so smart. I had to work harder for my grades and my dreams of becoming a biochemist had been pushed to the back of my mind.
In high school I was still working hard for my grades and was unsure of what I wanted to do in the future. My grades were good but not as competitive as I wanted them to be. Yet still I challenged myself with AP courses and dual enrollment classes and realized I still wanted to go into the science field. I took a forensic chemistry class that changed my perspective. We had a guest speaker come in to talk about her career in the forensics field and her career flexibility with having both a chemistry and biology degree, I knew I wanted to go into one of the two.
Eventually my junior and senior year it came time to look into which college I wanted to attend. I toured several schools in Maryland and in the end, Towson was the school that I knew I’d feel most comfortable attending. Additionally, after more research I found out Towson had an MB3 major which really intrigued me (Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, and Bioinformatics). This major interested me originally and was the main reason I attended Towson in addition to the welcoming community. I had gotten into the University of Maryland, and everyone bashed me for not attending their school, but I could see that that was not the path for me. I now attend Towson and I am a sophomore MB3 major with a concentration in Biochemistry and I am happy with where I am at. I am pursuing a track in pharmacy and currently taking the steps needed to get there. That being said, I hope more good things come in the future of my education.
