How to Network

Whether it’s in-person or online communicating, networking in the professional field is crucial for career growth and opportunities.

Here’s my personal blueprint to follow when reaching out and building connections:

Define Your Purpose:

Networking Blueprint -"The Way to Career Excellence"

Clearly, define your goals for networking. Are you seeking career advice, mentorship, collaboration, or job opportunities? Knowing your purpose will guide your approach.

Think about the 5 W’s (Who, What, Where, When, Why):  Who will I reach out to?  What information am I seeking to gain from this individual? Where are they located? Why am I planning to reach out to this person?

Research Your Target:

Use the internet to find the person you plan on reaching out to! LinkedIn is a great source

Identify individuals in your industry or profession whom you admire or want to connect with. Research their background, achievements, and current projects. This information will be valuable in your conversation or when you plan on asking questions. Additionally, you can find information which you can leverage during an interview.

For Example: I see you went to Towson University! Any tips for someone navigating Accounting as an undergrad?

Craft a Concise Introduction:

Develop a brief and compelling introduction that includes your name, profession, and a concise statement about your background or current role. Make it interesting and relevant to the person you’re reaching out to.

Here is one I’ve used in the past! Feel free to use it for yourself!

Dear [Recipient’s Name],

I hope this message finds you well. My name is [Your Name], and I recently came across your profile on [Platform] where I was impressed by your extensive experience and achievements in [Industry/Field]. Your insights caught my attention, and I would appreciate the opportunity to connect with you.

A bit about me: I am currently [Your Current Position or Role] at [Your Company or Institution], where I [brief description of your responsibilities]. I am passionate about [specific aspect of the industry], and your journey, as outlined on your profile, aligns closely with my career interests.

I am reaching out to request a brief informational interview to learn more about your experiences and gain valuable insights into the [specific industry/field]. I am particularly interested in understanding how you navigated challenges and any advice you may have for someone starting in the field.

Thank you for considering my request. I look forward to the opportunity to connect and learn from your wealth of experience.

With Appreciation,

[Your Name]

If you’re in person practice your elevator speech, which is a 30 second introduction about yourself. See “About me” for my elevator speech!

Utilize Professional Platforms (Virtual Only):

Leverage professional networking platforms such as LinkedIn. Ensure your profile is complete, highlighting your skills and experiences. Send personalized connection requests explaining your interest in connecting. Use the message above if you’re planning to reach out first.

Engage Meaningfully:

Example of my own networking to recruit guest speakers!

Once connected, engage with their content, share your insights, and participate in relevant discussions. This demonstrates your genuine interest in the field and can lead to natural conversations.

Request an Informational Interview:

Politely request a short informational interview to learn more about their experiences and insights. Be respectful of their time and clearly communicate the purpose of the meeting.

Prepare Thoughtful Questions:

Prepare a set of thoughtful questions about their career journey, challenges they’ve faced, and advice they might have for someone starting in the field. This shows that you value their expertise.

Here is a list of questions I would ask!

  • How did you discover your passion for [their field] and what motivated you to pursue it as a career?
  • How do you approach maintaining a work-life balance, and have there been any strategies that have worked well for you?
  • Are there specific mentors or role models who have influenced your career choices, and if so, what did you learn from them?
  • How do you set and prioritize goals in your career, and do you have any specific methods for tracking your progress?
  • Can you describe a project or accomplishment that you are particularly proud of in your career?

Always remember, people love talking about themselves!!

Express Genuine Interest:

During the conversation, actively listen and express genuine interest in what they share. Avoid sounding overly scripted or transactional; aim for a natural and authentic conversation.

Follow Up with Gratitude:

After the meeting, send a personalized thank-you message expressing your gratitude for their time and insights. Mention any specific points from the conversation that resonated with you.

Maintain Regular Contact:

Keep the connection alive by occasionally sharing relevant articles, updates, or insights. Stay connected without being intrusive, and be mindful of their time commitments.

Offer Reciprocity:

Be willing to offer your assistance or share your expertise if there’s an opportunity. Networking is a two-way street, and demonstrating your willingness to contribute adds value to the relationship.

Attend Industry Events:

Attend conferences, seminars, or networking events related to your field. These provide opportunities to meet professionals in person and expand your network organically.

Remember, networking is about building relationships, not just collecting contacts. Be patient, authentic, and proactive in cultivating meaningful connections within your professional field!
