It is usually easiest to take your leopard gecko to the vet where you purchase them, but if that is not available you can search for exotic vets in your area. You should take your gecko to the vet for yearly checkups just like you do with your dog and cat. It is important to make sure that they are maintaining a healthy weight, eating well, and that their tissues are regenerating properly (if this applies to your pet). Leopard geckos will “drop” their tail when they are very stressed, scared, or trapped. It is a defense mechanism that they use and is a sign of a very unhappy lizard, so if this happens it is important to evaluate why this happened and go to a veterinarian to make sure that the tissue grows back correctly. Other reasons to take your lizard to the vet are if they are not eating, they aren’t moving around as much as they usually do, or if they are having issues eliminating waste. They are fairly easy animals to tell if there is something wrong as long as you know the normal temperament of your pet because if they start acting differently then you should probably get them checked out!
