- This museum, which opened in 2005 and is entirely dedicated to the history and works of the Sierra Leone Government Railway, which ceased to function in 1975 (when the last train ran), is one of the most interesting attractions in Freetown. The exhibit includes a number of locomotives (including diesel locomotives), a Hunslet tank, and several coaches, including one used by Queen Elizabeth II during her official visit to Sierra Leone in 1961, prior to the country’s independence.
The museum is housed in a railway workshop, where the locomotives and carriages were miraculously saved from destruction during the civil war thanks to the efforts of the late Mohamed Bangura, the last general manager of the national workshops, and the assistance of railway enthusiast Colonel Steve Davies.
