The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a dog in the sporting dog family (the athletes) and looks much like a Labrador retriever. It was developed in the 19th century in the Chesapeake Bay area. Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are between 21 and 26 inches tall, and can weigh anywhere between 60 and 80 pounds. Although they look very much like a Labrador retriever, their coat is a bit more wavy than the Labrador’s and it is also waterproof! Due to the special location of the Chesapeake Bay area, there was a need to have a dog breed which could help with retrieval of waterfowl and help fishermen. Chesapeake bay retrievers are known to love the water at any time of the year. They are also very loyal and intelligent, have a willingness to work and a happy disposition, in other words – a perfect companion!
