My Favorite Memories

York holds a very special place in my heart, as I spent 15 years of my childhood there. As a young child, my neighbors and I would feed apples and carrots to the horses on the farm behind my house! My house was surrounded by multiple farms, and we also had a trampoline in the backyard where I spent hours doing flips. It was a quiet place with not much noise at all.

We often had snow days from school since the snow plows couldn’t plow the back roads where so many students lived, so we would go sledding down the big hills all over the neighborhood, or even on the roads that never got plowed. One of my neighbors had a four wheeler that we would drive around while snow blew in our faces. When I was old enough, I got a snow tubing pass at Avalanche Express. My friends and I would meet up on Friday nights and go snow tubing and ice skating, followed by some hot chocolate inside the resort.

In the hot summers we would spend nearly every day at Wisehaven, the community pool club. All of my friends and our families would meet up, the kids would swim while the parents hung out in the grass on blankets or by the adult pool. When I was old enough, my dad would drop me off in the mornings and come back for me before dinner. If I was lucky, we would have pizza at the pool for dinner followed by a popsicle from the concession stand. For the Fourth of July, there were firework shows almost every night for an entire week. My neighbors would set off huge fireworks for everyone to watch, and all of the schools would host shows as well.

During the school year I spent my Friday nights at the Red Lion High School football games, where everyone in town was. My high school had the largest stadium in the county, and it would be packed with fans. Even as a young kid I enjoyed going to watch the big kids play. Sometimes they would even have special Friday nights where elementary students could march on the field, or sing the national anthem.
