typically, the units for mother & Baby, Labor & Delivery and pediatrics would be on the same floor. since they all have to do with mothers and children. the first main unit would be Labor & Delivery or (L&D) for short. this unit would mainly give care to women who are in the final stages of pregnancy and are giving birth. the staff there usually consists of obstetricians, nurses and anesthesiologists and pediatricians all of these staff members. the unit also specializes in:
- childbirth education
- pain management
- breastfeeding support
- and neonatal intensive care (N.I.C.U)
Labor & Delivery usually has:
- A labor room where women would stay during the final and active phase of labor with equipment hookup to monitor the baby and mother’s vital signs and give them pain killers to help them get through it.
- A Delivery room where they’d give birth via C-section or vaginally with the medical staff assisting with the attendance of a loved one. and just in case it also has equipment to resuscitate the baby if it’s at all necessary as well as a warmer to keep the baby warm after birth.
- A postpartum room, this would be the room the women and baby would stay after delivery, depending on the patient’s condition and the hospital’s policy it would be up to 1 or 2 days. it’s like a little hotel featuring a TV, bed, couch, refrigerator and crib for the baby to sleep in it’s a room basically for the mother and baby to relax and settle themselves.
- A family lounge where the friends and family would wait and visit after the delivery.
and lastly on the floor would be pediatrics which gives care for children who need are injured, sick or need surgery. they also give services like play therapy, education, child life and family support.
