The Baltimore Museum of Art

The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) is an art museum located in Baltimore, Maryland. It was founded in 1914 and has an extensive collection of 95,000 objects, including European painting and sculpture, American painting, sculpture, and decorative arts, modern and contemporary art, African art, and works on paper.

The BMA’s collection includes works by a diverse range of artists, including Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Andy Warhol. One of the museum’s most notable holdings is the Cone Collection, which was assembled by sisters Claribel and Etta Cone and includes works by Matisse, Picasso, and other modern artists.

In addition to its permanent collection, the BMA also hosts a variety of temporary exhibitions, educational programs, and public events. The museum’s campus includes several buildings and outdoor spaces, including the Main Building, the Contemporary Wing, and the Sculpture Gardens.

Admission to the Baltimore Museum of Art is free, and the museum is open Wednesday through Sunday.

 

American Visionary Art Museum

The American Visionary Art Museum (AVAM) is a museum located in Baltimore, Maryland that specializes in self-taught art, outsider art, and visionary art. It was founded in 1995 by Rebecca Hoffberger and has been recognized as one of the most unique and interesting museums in the United States.

The AVAM’s permanent collection includes more than 4,000 works of art, including sculptures, paintings, drawings, and installations. The museum’s exhibitions often feature works by artists who are not trained in traditional artistic techniques, but who create art as a form of self-expression.

One of the museum’s most notable features is the building itself, which was designed to be an “outsider” work of art. The building is a former whiskey warehouse that was transformed into a colorful and eclectic space featuring mosaics, sculptures, and other works of art.

The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum

The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Museum (B&O) is a museum located in Baltimore, Maryland that celebrates the history of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, one of the oldest and most important railroads in the United States. The museum was founded in 1953 and is located in the historic Mount Clare neighborhood.

The B&O’s collection includes more than 200 locomotives, passenger cars, and other railroad equipment, as well as thousands of artifacts, photographs, and documents related to the history of the railroad. One of the museum’s most notable holdings is the historic Mount Clare Station, which was the original terminus of the B&O Railroad and is now a National Historic Landmark.

In addition to its permanent collection, the B&O also hosts a variety of temporary exhibitions, educational programs, and public events. Visitors can take train rides on a historic railroad line, explore the museum’s many exhibits, and participate in hands-on activities and workshops.

The Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum

The Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum is a historic site located in Baltimore, Maryland that celebrates the life and work of the American writer Edgar Allan Poe. The house is located in the historic neighborhood of West Baltimore and is believed to be the only surviving residence where Poe lived. 

The National Great Blacks in Wax Museum is a museum located in Baltimore, Maryland that celebrates the contributions of African Americans to American history and culture. The museum was founded in 1983 by Dr. Joanne Martin and her late husband Elmer Martin and is one of the largest African American wax museums in the country.

The museum’s permanent collection includes more than 100 life-sized wax figures, as well as dioramas, artifacts, and interactive exhibits, that showcase the accomplishments and struggles of African Americans throughout history. The museum covers a wide range of topics, from the Middle Passage and slavery to the Civil Rights Movement and contemporary culture.

One of the museum’s most notable exhibits is the Underground Railroad, which features a replica of a slave ship and a secret room where visitors can learn about the efforts of Harriet Tubman and other abolitionists to help slaves escape to freedom.
