Typically, gymnasts compete two vaults, each getting its own score. Whichever score is the highest is the score that counts. Scores are given out of a 10.0 and tenths (0.1) are taken off for each deduction, or mistake, you make. These deductions could include bent knees, low amplitude, steps on the landing, and much more. In college, however, six people on a team each compete one vault and the five top scores count towards the team score.
