Stanley Hotel

Stanley Hotel exterior during winter time.

The Stanley Hotel is a grand, stately lodge located in Estes Park, Colorado. It became open to the public on July 4, 1909. After years of neglect and insufficient funds, the hotel was at risk for closures. In 1974, author Stephen King arrived at the hotel while on a weekend getaway with his wife. Upon arrival, both realized they were the only residents staying at the hotel during the time. That night, Stephen had a nightmare that his three year old son was being chased by a fire hose though the hotel hallways, as he ran and yelled in fear. This petrified Stephen to the point he woke up sweating, and inches away from toppling off the bed. This dream ultimately inspired one of his greatest novels, The Shining, which later was turned into a film.

Haunted History – Residents who have stayed at the Stanley Hotel have reported signs of paranormal activity. The establishment is said to be haunted by several spirits, including a ghost of a child with autism who plays with guests’ hair.
