Starting up is obviously the first step in flying an airplane, almost all planes come with a checklist that can be used for startup and taxi. This checklist consists of everything you need to do (even considers certain outside conditions) in order to safely start an airplane.
The typical procedure for starting a Cessna 172 (in picture below) consists of a few easy steps:
- Turn the master on (battery)
- Push mixture and throttle full in
- Prime the engine with the fuel boost pump for 4 seconds
- Pull the throttle and mixture fully out
- Place feet firmly on the brakes
- Turn the key to the start position until engine starts then release starter
- Smoothly push in mixture to keep engine running
- Affirm that proper fuel and oil pressures have shown on screen
- Turn on avionics and outside lights
