The come command is a common word used to recall a dog. In order to do any off-leash work a dog must have a great recall. Dogs will instinctively come if the trainer is more interesting than there are surroundings, so in order to teach the beginning stages of come a trainer will have to be high energy and have rewards that the dog loves.
To start off teaching the come command use a short leash, approximately 6 foot, and let the dog roam around and be interested in other things. Once the dog is not paying attention to you lower yourself to the ground as you say the cue word, which in this case is come. It also helps to have open arms and speak in a higher voice. If the dog still hasn’t come to you try getting even lower or making other body movements that are inviting, as well as calling the dog’s name. once the dog gets to you reward them in a very high energy way that will continue to keep them motivated. Like any other command, repetition is needed from that point And slowly phase out how much body language you’re using to recall the dog. So, once the dog notices you and is on their way to you, you can get back up, so that you are in a standing position when the dog gets to you followed by a large amount of praise.
