Founded in 1845, the United States Naval Academy was originally named Fort Severn, a 10-acre naval school whose first class consisted of only 50 midshipmen. In the following years, the Fort evolved into what it is now known as, where midshipman across the country attend the four-year academy to become officers in the United States Navy. In its evolution, the Academy grew from 10 acres to 336, with class sizes consistently reaching 4,500 midshipmen.
