Colonial Annapolis

Before becoming the capitol of Maryland, Annapolis was originally the first capitol of the newly formed United States of America at the end of the Revolutionary War in 1783. For almost a year, the now Maryland State House performed the governmental duties of the new nation, with landmarks such as the Treaty of Paris being ratified there in 1784.

The Maryland State House, whose construction began in 1772, acted as the first capitol of the United States.
