Summary and Impact:
Hiccup is a boy who lives on the island of Berk, where his father, Stoick the Vast, is the chief of the tribe. On the island, it is tradition for people to protect and defend themselves against dragons. Hiccup differs from other Vikings as he disagrees with these ways and is not as physically strong but is an inventor who is more creative. One night, Hiccup captures a nightfury dragon, a rare and dangerous breed, and sees that it is injured and later named Toothless. Hiccup cannot bring himself to kill Toothless and instead befriends it. As Hiccup and Toothless become good friends, it furthers Hiccup’s belief that Vikings should not fight the dragons but instead work with them. Hiccup creates a tail fin for Toothless since he is missing one to help him fly better. Hiccup starts to show his peers his relationship with Toothless, and at first, his peers show skepticism, then begin to show trust. At the same time, Stoick and many other Vikings disagreed and frowned on Hiccup’s measures. Hiccup begins to convince his peers that dragons and Vikings can peacefully cohabitate together. The town of Berk then faces Red Death, a massive dragon that has abilities unlike any other dragons seen so far. Hiccup and his peers use the friendship they have gained with the dragons to help defeat Red Death and save the town of Berk. The town of Berk sees Hiccup’s and Toothless’s courageous acts and claims them as heroes. The movie ends with the town of Berk starting to peacefully cohabitate with dragons. HTTYD has a strong message showing that despite previous prejudice and negative stereotypes that the Vikings had, they can be overcome and defied simply by getting to know the dragons instead of labeling them as an enemy. It shows that you can defy prejudice by educating yourself. HTTYD shows that you should follow your beliefs to make a positive transformation despite the controversy, even if it makes you go against societal norms.
