Location: Mountain gorillas live in forests at elevations of 8,000 to 13,000 feet. About 1/3 of mountain gorillas live in the Virunga mountains.
Appearance: Their thicker fur, compared to other apes, allows them to survive in their habitat which drops below freezing often. Adult males weigh about 430 pounds and, when standing, can be up to five feet tall.
Social Aspects: Mountain gorillas are social and live in groups referred to as troops, always led by the “silverback”. The silverback protects its troop members and leads in activities such as nesting, feeding, and migration.
