Coming in the number 4 spot and similar to the red oak tree is white oak. White oak is around 26.5 Million BTUs per cord of firewood, making it more desirable than red oak because it burns slightly hotter, and slower. In comparison a propane torch burns around 50 thousand BTU, where white oak burns at 26.5 Million BTU per cord. That’s a lot of heat!

The easiest way to identify white oak is by the tree. White oak has a white/gray bark that looks flaky compared to the tighter bark of the red oak. The leaves also typically have rounded lobes opposed to the red oak’s defined points.
