Red Oak Leaf and Bark.

The easiest way to identify red oak is to look at the tree. Red oak tends to have a darker and tighter bark, meaning less flakey, compared to white oak. The leaves on a red oak and white oak look similar but are different. On a red oak the lobes of the leaves tend to be pointed, and while this tree makes a great firewood it is second to its brother the white oak.
