RWD Volvo’s

From Volvo’s early beginnings up until the late 1990s, most of their vehicles were rear-wheel drive (RWD). This means that the engine sent the power to the rear wheels to move the vehicle. RWD vehicles are traditionally more fun to drive and more durable. This character trait was synonymous with some of the best Volvo’s made during this era.

This era birthed most of my favorite Volvos. There was the PV544, a sporty offering with supreme handling. This vehicle would set safety and performance standards for its market. Then there was the P1800ES, a sporty hatchback with a punchy 4 cylinder. Then came the iconic aforementioned bricks. Special models included the 242 GT, 245 Turbo, 240 Classic, 780 Bertone, 740 Turbo Intercooler, and more. All of these are cult classics and well sought after today.

A trademark of these vehicles was the engine underneath the hood, the redblock. Redblock motors were 4 cylinder motors ranging in various displacements offered in both carburation and fuel injection. Though many engines are notable for their power, these engines were workhorses. They were underpowered by the factory and nowadays can be found handling 3,4 and more times the original power without issue. These engines simply don’t die.

I have owned many Volvo’s but my 1991 Volvo 240 is by far my favorite. With its 2.3l fuel injected redblock and M47 5-Speed manual, it is a treat to drive. I have taken it over 10 hours from home multiple times on a routine road trip and it does so comfortably and reliably. It is by no means the fastest but it will get you there safe and sound.
