Ligue 1

The Ligue 1 is the top division of Franch soccer. This league consists of 18 clubs which also operates on a system of promotion and relegation. The origins of Ligue 1 date back to 1932, when French football first organized into a professional national league. Initially named National and later Division 1, it was rebranded to Ligue 1 in 2002, reflecting a modern era of French football.

Point System:

  • Three points awarded for a win.
  • One point awarded for a draw.
  • No points awarded for a loss.

In Ligue 1 the team with the greatest number of points at the end of the season is the Ligue 1 trophy and is noted as the best team in France. The name of the prestigious trophy is called the L’Hexagoal, designed and created by Pablo Reinoso.

During the end of the season and annual playoff fixture is played to determine who is promoted and who leaves Ligue 1. The 16th place team in Ligue 1 and the winner of the tier 2 division “Ligue 2” play promotion playoffs. Playoffs is a two-legged tie, and the winner is decided by aggregate score. The first leg is played the home stadium of the Ligue 2 club, and the second leg is played at the home stadium of the Ligue 1 club.
