Overcoming Your Own Fear

Fear is a natural response for humans to experience. We feel it when feel there is a threat of danger, harm, or pain. When we feel fear the reason why is different for everyone, its normal to experience fear and it protects people from experiencing some type of harm. A lot of times fear isn’t from something real and when it isn’t real, it can extinguished by thinking through the situation (using logic).

For some people thinking through a situation doesn’t always work. The fear some individuals have gained is turns into a mental obstacle. This mental obstacle stops people from being able to do things they once enjoyed or go to places they once went to or would like to visit.

People often to say the easiest way to overcome a fear is to do the thing you’re scared of. By completing this act, you’re able to see that what you are afraid of is something you can easily conquer and won’t actually cause any harm.

Individuals who suffer from a mental illness may not be able to just do what they’re afraid of. Whether that’s apply for college, get a job, or even get off bed. Instead these individuals should take the first step and accept that they need help.

Psychologist are the people who are trained to help with this fear. They can provide methods of helping that are significant to each individual, who needs help. They can begin to break down patterns of fear and avoidance and tackle the issues an individual faces. Since COVID-19 a lot of our lives have become virtual. Psychologists and psychiatrists will often see individuals virtually. This can be the first step to an individual getting out of their comfort zone without creating a larger fear.
