About
Largemouth bass are predators typically found in ponds, lakes, and rivers. They typically feed on smaller fish like bluegill or shad and other small animals like frogs, lizards, and even small birds. These fish are typically between 1-3lbs, but can reach a maximum size of 20lbs.
Fishing
In the summertime, I like to fish for largemouth bass in the morning and I use buzz baits and topwater frog lures. In the afternoon when the sun comes up and the water warms up, the bass like to go deeper into the water column, making crankbaits, swimbaits, and soft plastics better alternatives for lures. In colder months, as many other fish do, largemouth bass tend to become lethargic and feed less. You can still catch them, however, you just need to use more finesse lures like dropshot rigs and jerk baits. Typically, ponds with lots of cover and vegetation are loaded with small to mid sized largemouth bass and you can catch a lot of them per trip with the right strategies. It can be more challenging to catch largemouth bass in reservoirs and big rivers, but persistence can be rewarded with larger fish compared to the ones you’d find in ponds. I like to use baitcasting and 2000-3000 sized spinning reels for largemouth bass with either braided or fluorocarbon line.
