Walleye

About

Walleye are among the tastiest freshwater fish out there, but they are also one of the trickiest to catch. Walleye are a cold-water fish found primarily in rivers that feed on minnows, crawfish, and insects. They feed best and spawn when the water temperature reaches approximately 55 degrees. On average, walleye are between 15-20 inches and weigh around 1-3lbs.

24-inch walleye I caught in the lower Susquehanna River.

Fishing

Walleye are not very aggressive, and require finesse and skill to catch them. Light action rods (medium light-medium) and reels (2000-3000) with light line work best. Walleye like to feed on bait and small lures, such as crankbaits, jerk baits, and 3-4 inch soft plastic paddle tails. These fish are very difficult to catch during the day (unless it’s overcast) and primarily feed at night due to their great vision. When fishing for these fish, look for areas of water with a good current flow and fish your lure against the current, as walleye tend to look down stream and wait until they see prey to ambush.
