According to the WWF (World Wildlife Fund), there are plenty of ways to eat more sustainable. A big thing emphasized is to eat more plant-based foods. They need less water, land, and energy then meat does, meaning they have a lower demand on the environment’s resources. Seafood especially can come with a detrimental environmental impact, so if you do choose to eat seafood, make sure it is certified by the MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) or ASC (Aquaculture Stewardship Council). By doing this, you can ensure your seafood comes from fisheries and farms that are held to an environmental responsibility to be sustainable. Not only should you be careful of what you eat, but when you eat what you eat. Make sure you reduce food waste by eating your produce and other perishables before they go bad and don’t shop at the grocery shop until you have eaten all your food. You should also shop at farmers markets, buying local and seasonal foods. This helps keep carbon emissions low since you don’t have to transport food from all over the world. Also, look for foods packaged in sustainable and minimal packaging, and if you have to use something such as a produce bag, you can bring your own! Lastly, support farms that promote eco-friendly agriculture by promoting soil health, biodiversity, and eco-friendly ways of farming.
