According to the article “Green Influence: Championing Sustainability from Any Desk” on welcometothejungle.com, you can advocate for sustainability, even if you aren’t involved with sustainability work as your career. The first step is to educate yourself about the environmental issues around you, especially pertaining to your community. This way, you can know exactly what initiatives you would like to advocate for. You can also model behaviors in your workspace that you would like to be done. You can do things like turning the lights off when you leave a room, reducing the amount of paper you use, minimizing overall energy consumption, bringing a reusable coffee cup to work, etc. You can also inform and inspire your colleagues about sustainability by having discussions, planning meetings (with your bosses’ permission of course if needed), and organizing sustainability-based workshops. You can talk to your boss or facilitators about sustainable things able to be done in the office, like recycling programs and using more energy efficient technology. It is important to make sure you collaborate with people who are also interested in sustainability, and you can even form a group of people who are like-minded. This is important because people are stronger in groups, and if people see a large number of people want change, it is more likely to happen. Overall, using these strategies you can help promote a sustainable environment.
Something I learned from YouTube videos from “Shelbizleee” is that sending letters to your representatives is very important. A lot of what happens in sustainability is out of our control unfortunately, and we need to reach out to government officials to help us. The more people that reach out to their representatives or people in governmental power, the better, because it shows the government that environmental sustainability is what the people want. Attending political or governmental meetings in your local community is another great way to make your voice heard to advocate for sustainability. Overall, trying to reach those in governmental or political power is untimely the best way to go when it comes to advocating for sustainability.
