Ethiopian Culture and Tradition

Coffee ceremony in Ethiopia is very unique. It is a tradition to sit at one place together with family, friends, neighbors, and guests and have coffee together. Coffee is always served with snacks.
Eating raw beef with family and friends is one of Ethiopian Tradition. It is enjoyed with different sauces and spices.
Meskel is a major Ethiopian festival celebrated for two days starting on September 26th. It commemorates Queen Helena’s discovery of the True Cross in 326 AD. The first day, Demera, involves lighting large bonfires topped with crosses and Meskel daisies. The Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church leads the ceremony with dancing and singing around the fires. The second day, Meskel, includes feasting and marking foreheads with ash from the bonfire. The festival coincides with the blooming of Meskel daisies and is celebrated widely, especially in Addis Ababa at Meskel Square.
Ethiopian new years which takes place on September 11th, there is a tradition called “Enkutatash” where young girls perform new years song called “Abebayishoy” by performing to as much peoples house as they could.
