The two overachievers of the 2023 season were the Baltimore Orioles and the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Baltimore Orioles only came into the season with a projected 70-win season. They finished the season with 101 wins, but unfortunately fell short, losing to the Texas Rangers in the first round of the playoffs. The Arizona Diamondbacks came into the season with a projected win total of 65 games and finished with 84 wins. However, they went on a Cinderella playoff run and made it to the World Series but fell short to the Texas Rangers.
The two underachievers were the New York Mets and the New York Yankees. Both teams came into the season with a projected win total of 94 games, but both teams finished with below 83 wins and missed the playoffs. While they were the worst teams, based on their projected win total and their 1st and 2nd largest payrolls, it was a huge blow of a season to both teams.
