Purpose of National Parks

National parks have several purposes. These purposes include:

  • being public resources for:
    • recreation
    • education
    • scholarship
  • preservation of endangered landscapes, natural environments, and species

The National Park Foundation has explained that their mission, specifically, is to “preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations.”
