Once upon a time Baltimore was home to over 240 neighborhood movie theatres, and it seemed that these beautiful architectural monuments that lit up the streets of the city at night would last forever. By the 1950s, however, the number of theatres available to moviegoers in the city dropped to just under 120. Today, only three of them remain and continue to show movies. Sadly, many have been demolished, burned down, boarded up, or server as storefronts for various types of businesses and even churches. Drive around the city and you can still make out the facades of old movie houses. Beautiful marquees that once featured Academy Award winning movie titles and stars now advertise discounts at pharmacies or have deteriorated and sit exposed.
This page features the three movie theatres in Baltimore City that remain – The Senator Theatre, The Charles Theatre, and The SNF Parkway Theatre – and provides information on how you can help keep them alive for generations to come.
