Personal Experience

Hi! I’m here to tell you my personal experience about having a cat. I currently have two cats, Blackjack (left) and Kitty (right). Blackjack is 17 years old and Kitty is eight.

Blackjack was my very first cat. He is a male domestic shorthair and he weighs about seven pounds. My dad surprised my brother and I with him when I was just a little girl. He has practically been in my life in its entirety and he is my baby. He loves to go outdoors, chase bunnies, and catch birds. Also, he loves when I open a can of Friskies cat food for him! His favorite is probably the beef shreds. He also loves Temptations treats. Keep in mind these treats are not very healthy and one treat has been described as the equivalent of one donut to a human. This past summer, he was diagnosed with Feline Hyperthyroidism. With this condition, he has an increased appetite, he is more vocal (constant and loud meowing), and has lost a sufficient amount of weight. An average cat his age should weigh about 10 pounds. Luckily, the veterinarian prescribed him medication that we have to feed him daily for the rest of his life. Since taking these pills, he has put on some weight. Before his diagnosis, he was very active, friendly, and loving. While I know his age may slow him down, he still has a lot of fight left in him!

Kitty, on the other hand, is a Female Calico cat. One thing you may not know is that the Calico breed of cats is predominantly female. We got kitty when she was about a few months old and she was a stray living in Deep Creek Lake, MD. We took her in, gave her a warm and loving home, and now she is the happiest and most energetic cat ever! We originally were going to name her Snickers, but when we found out she was a female, we decided that name did not fit as much. My family and I could not decide on another name and Kitty just stuck. Kitty loves to sleep on soft blankets, but is also just as happy on a plastic bag or in a cardboard box. Often, we find Kitty sleeping throughout the house much more than Blackjack.

Silver and Chloe
These are two of my past cats. We had to put Chloe down due to breast cancer and my dad gave Silver away because she had trouble using the litter box.
