Take breaks: Just like humans, dogs need breaks too. Taking breaks in between learning lessons is a great idea so the dog is more reinforced. Taking breaks helps with memory and attention span.
How to train a dog to stay
- Choose a quiet location with little distractions.
- Put you dog in a given position (sitting or laying down).
- Have a treat and give a cue “stay” or hand motion.
- Quickly give the dog a treat if they stay.
- Continue this process a couple of times.
- Next, start moving backwards as you give the cue.
- If stays, give a treat.
- Continue this process a couple of times.
- Next, walk away and when you want the dog to come, give the verbal cue to come or hand motion
- Reward with a treat if they come.
- Continue asking the dog to stay then to come until they understand.
- If they come early, do not give treat and use a verbal no in order to make the dog realize that they need to wait.
- Practice in different locations with more distractions.
- Be patient with your dog when teaching them to stay.
