Choosing the right timing: Timing is the most important thing when it comes to training your dog. Make sure you are prepared to give the treat or reward quickly after the action is done by the dog. In doing this, they will understand what they are being rewarded for.

How to train a dog to lay down

  1. Grab a treat and grab the dogs attention with the treat.
  2. If the dog knows how to sit, ask the dog to sit first.
  3. One the dog is sitting, take the treat and put it to the ground.
  4. If the dog lays down, reward the dog with a treat.
  5. If the dog does not lay down, keep trying until the dog lays down and instantly give treat.
  6. Repeat continually until the dog understands to lay down.
  7. Once you practice multiple times, you can a cue to laying down or hand motion.
  8. Pick the desired action, and practice with the dog with giving a treat when laying down is done.
  9. Keep practicing frequently and making sure you are rewarding the dog if lays down.
  10. Practice sitting and laying down with your dog to see if you need to keep practicing.
