What is dance?

Dance by definition is the movement of the body in a rhythmic way, usually to music and within a given space, for the purpose of expressing an idea or emotion, releasing energy, or simply taking delight in the movement itself. (1)

When most think of dance they tend to think of it as being this one big thing, which is true to an extent. Dance has many different styles which enable everyone to pick the style they prefer the best. Today we will focus on 4 out of the many different options.

  • Ballet

Ballet is an artistic dance genre in which precise and highly formal predetermined steps and gestures are executed to music. The use of pointe shoes and delicate, beautiful, flowing movements are hallmarks of classical ballet.
  • Hip Hop

Hip hop dance is a style that refers to a variety of street dance techniques that are largely performed to hip hop music or have grown as a result of hip hop culture.
  • Contemporary

Contemporary dance is a form of expressive dance that incorporates aspects of modern, jazz, lyrical, and classical ballet. Through flowing dance movements, contemporary dancers attempt to integrate the body and mind.
