The World Cup is by far the most important and popular sporting event for Brasilians. Brasil has the most World Cup trophies in the history of the event (5). Winning in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002.
The World Cup started back in 1930 for the first time with only 13 teams participating. It took place in Uruguay in the capitol, Montevideo. Uruguay was the first team to win the tournament.

Brasil’s success in the World Cup didn’t flourish until the emergence of Pele, arguably the best soccer player to ever exist. In his first World Cup at only the age of 16, Pele helped Brasil to their first World Cup victory in 1958. Pele also won two more World Cups with Brasil (1962 & 1970). Brasil’s next World Cup victory came twenty-four years later, in 1994. The 1994 Brasil team is what started the “jogo bonito” (the “beautiful game”) with legends like Ronaldo, Romario, Cafu etc. Their most recent win came shortly after in 2002, with one of the best teams soccer has ever seen, going undefeated (7-0) in the World Cup tournament. The 2002 team was full of superstars like; Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Kaka, Roberto Carlos, Rivaldo, Cafu etc.
Brasil is the only team to qualify for every World Cup since the start of the tournament, and have only been eliminated in the group stage 3 times (the lowest # out of any other teams). Brasil has always had great success in the World Cup tournament due to the culture of soccer in Brasil, and the love and support of the entire country every time they go out and play.
