Bolivian Cuisine

Cuñapé

A traditional meal prevalent in Eastern Bolivia, particularly in Santa Cruz and the Northeastern regions of the country, is cuñapé. This dish is eaten with a cup of coffee or tea and is made of white cheese, egg, salt, milk, and yam flour molded into bread balls. Snacking on some Cuñapé is a terrific way to refuel when visiting Bolivia. Street sellers selling cuñapé can be seen in and around bus stops.

Empanadas De Queso

If you enjoy empanadas, you will adore this Bolivian variation that has a gooey, cheesy interior. Throughout South America, this dish is a staple that many residents eat for breakfast or teatime. Empanadas de queso are sold at several food stalls owned by street vendors and can be baked or fried.

Alfajores

Delicious sweets called alfalfajores are a must-try when in Bolivia. These sweets are more like cookie sandwiches than anything you can just eat. The Dulce de Leche layer in the middle of the extremely soft biscuits makes them melt in your tongue.
