Aretha Franklin was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1942. Her legendary career began at a young age when she was raised by a family who had a deep connection to gospel music and singing in the church. Aretha signed her first record deal at the young age of 18, yet her career did not reach its full swing until the 1960’s when she signed with Atlantic Records. Her famous hits like “Respect,” “Think,” and “Natural Woman,” showcased her extreme vocal talent, yet were also pivotal anthems throughout the feminist and civil rights movements. These songs led people to feel empowered and to know of the self-respect they deserved.

With 18 Grammy Awards, her contribution to the music industry is like no other. She was the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Not only did her music help inspire change, but she also used her platform to address social issues and to speak out against the male-dominated music industry.
