Skills

Figure skaters learn a wide array of skating skills from basic technique to advanced jumps and spins. The most notable skills are jumps and spins.

There are six common jumps that each have a single, double, triple, and quadruple variation. These are:

  1. Axel
  2. Toe loop
  3. Salchow
  4. Loop
  5. Flip
  6. Lutz

All of these jumps can be done in combination. For example, an axel with a loop jump, or a lutz jump with a toe loop. Olympic figure skaters often perform advanced jumps such as a triple lutz with a triple toe loop.

Figure skaters also learn an array of spins. There are three basic spin positions; upright spins, sit spins, and camel spins. Within each of these spin positions, there are a few common spins.

Upright spins
